High-speed steels (HSS) are a type of tool steel with increased wearability and hardness. It is a steel alloy composed of steel substrate and metal carbide that work together to improve the hardness and wearability of the material.
High-speed steels are most commonly used in cutting tools; their composition makes them ideal for working in high temperatures and high speeds. They cut much faster than high carbon steels, hence the name high-speed steel.
Where other steel types will begin to wear or become brittle and break entirely, high-speed steels are ideal for the job. In addition, using high-speed steel in your industry will help reduce the likelihood of downtime needed to fix issues and replace or sharpen machinery parts.

The two primary High-Speed Steel grades we stock are:
M42 has the perfect combination of toughness and hardness. As a result, this highly cobalt alloyed steel is most effective in conditions where the demand for hardness is required.
M42 has an additional 8% cobalt in its composition compared to M2, giving it superior hardness over its alternative.
We stock M42 in various formats, including bars, plates and sheets, all ready to deliver across the UK and Worldwide.
M2 is also a good steel grade choice when extreme toughness and hardness is required. M2 is ideal for use in conditions that aren’t as extreme as those in which M42 is used; for example, the temperature isn’t as high, or the speeds aren’t as fast.
M2 is a brilliant all-rounder high-speed steel, available at fantastic prices. If the higher quality of M42 is unnecessary, then M2 is your best bet steel grade.
The applications of M2 are mostly similar to M42; choosing between the two is dependant on the conditions of the application.
